UN: More than 80 million displaced globally in first half of year

Dec 14, 2020

Refugees arriving in Liberia from Cote d ‘Ivoire are waiting to be registered in October 2020

The U.N. refugee agency says the number of forced displaced people worldwide is estimated to have exceeded 80 million in the first half of this year, doubling in the past decade. The number of people forced from their homes is increasing while the number able to return is decreasing.

In its report, UNHCR said COVID-19 has further increased the suffering of displaced people. “The outbreak has led to a temporary decline in the number of new asylum seekers, mainly due to travel restrictions and border closures imposed to combat the epidemic, some of which prohibit entry and allow no exceptions, but the root causes of conflicts around the world remain unresolved.”
